OrganizationalSample
Organisation chart
A hierarchy of people and roles: who reports to whom, how wide each manager’s span is, and how deep the organisation goes.
Try this
- 01Click a data engineer: the reporting line up to the Chief Data Officer lights up.
- 02Press “Leadership only”, then open one team at a time with the badge under a card.
- 03Compare spans: which head of department has the most direct reports?
Notation
- Box
- A person or a position, with a name and a role.
- Reporting line
- Connects a person to their direct manager. Each person has one.
- Span of control
- How many people report directly to one manager.
- Levels
- How many layers sit between the top and the front line.
Use it when
- Showing data ownership and stewardship roles
- Onboarding: who to ask for what
- Planning reorganisations and spans of control
Avoid it when
- Matrix organisations with several reporting lines (a tree cannot show them)
- Showing how work actually flows (use BPMN)
