Privacy

This is a personal site that publishes articles and interactive data visualizations. It has no accounts, no comments and no newsletter, so there is very little to say here. What there is, is below.

In short: no analytics, no tracking pixels, no advertising, and no personal data collected. One preference is stored in your own browser, and the host keeps standard server logs. Some pages show an image or a video published elsewhere, which your browser fetches from that publisher.

What is stored in your browser

Choosing a theme (light, dark or system) saves that choice in your browser’s local storage so the site does not flash the wrong theme on your next visit. It stays on your device, is never sent anywhere, and clearing your site data removes it.

Some interactive pages remember small bits of state while you use them, such as which display mode or step you selected. That state lives in the page and disappears when you close the tab.

No cookies are set by this site. A video player embedded from YouTube can set its own once you press play, which is covered below.

What is not collected

There is no analytics service, no tag manager, no advertising network, no session recording and no fingerprinting. Nobody is profiled, and nothing is sold or shared, because nothing is gathered in the first place.

There are no accounts, no sign-in, no comment system and no contact or subscription form, so the site never asks you for a name, an email address or any other personal detail.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes the technical information your browser sends when it requests a page, such as your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser and device type. That data is handled by Vercel as the host and is used to serve pages and keep the service running. It is not combined with anything else here, and it is not used to identify readers.

Pages are prerendered and served as static files. Fonts are served from the site itself, and nothing here calls an API while you read.

Pictures and video from elsewhere

The libraries catalogue work published by other people. Where a publisher makes a preview image available, your browser loads it from them rather than from a copy kept here, so the publisher’s server sees the request. Those images are requested without a referrer, so they are not told which page you were reading. Images uploaded by me are served from Cloudinary, which is a content delivery network and does not profile you.

Where the artifact is a video published on YouTube, it is embedded so it can be watched in place. The frame is loaded from youtube-nocookie.com, which does not set cookies until you press play. The frame is requested when it comes into view, which on those pages means as the page opens, so YouTube sees that request whether or not you watch anything. Press play and YouTube is a third party serving you on its own terms, under Google’s privacy policy. Nothing here is told whether you pressed play.

Links out

Articles and libraries link to other sites: publishers, data sources, tools and the originals of charts discussed here. Once you follow a link, that site’s own privacy policy applies, and some of them do track their visitors. Links to other sites are not endorsements of how they handle your data.

Your rights

Where the GDPR applies, you have rights of access, correction, erasure, restriction, objection and portability over your personal data. Since this site holds no personal data about you, there is nothing here to access or erase. For the server logs described above, the host is the party that processes them.

Changes and contact

If this site ever adds analytics, a form or anything else that touches personal data, this page will be updated before that happens, and the date below will change.

Questions about this page can go through the contact details on my portfolio.
