The Pudding
An independent team of journalist-engineers
A digital publication of visual essays that explain ideas debated in culture, from music and film to language and the internet.
What you will find
- Visual essays built around one cultural question each
- Scrollytelling pieces where the chart changes as you scroll
- Notes on method at the end of each story, and open code for many projects
What we can learn from it
- 01Scrolling as narration: each step adds one idea to the same chart
- 02Start from a question readers already care about, then bring the data
- 03Keep the method out of the way of the story, but always publish it
Chart types you will meet there
Scatter plot
Plots two numeric measures against each other to reveal correlation, clusters and outliers.
Dot / strip plot
Every observation as a dot along a line, one row per group, with a little jitter to separate overlaps.
Bump chart
Tracks how the rank of each item changes over time; crossings are overtakes.
